Blending and Segmenting Words
Develop Decoding and Spelling skills
Words are a set of syllables placed in a certain way. For example: cer . tain
Each syllable is a set of sounds called phonemes that are spoken as a single unit.
For example: /s/, /ə/ (shwa sound) and /r/ make cer. /t/, /ə/, /n/ make tain.
Key Concepts:
1. Identify the phonemes in each single syllable word
2. Segment given word into phonemes.
3. Ex: ‘eight’ - / a /, / t / - (2 phonemes)
4. Realize that number of phonemes is different from number of letters in a word. Ex: ‘eight’ has two phonemes but 5 letters
5. Recognize between long and short vowel sounds in single syllable words
6. Listen to the phonemes given
7. Practice sliding sounds together to form a single syllable word (blending)
Why it Matters:
1. Understanding that words are made of sounds allows students to decode unfamiliar words and read rather than just memorizing them.
2. Decoding helps students map words phonetically which helps with spelling
3. When students hear every phoneme in a word/syllable, they are less likely to skip letters when writing.
4. Recognizing syllable patterns helps students tackle longer multisyllabic words with confidence.
Teaching Strategies:
1. Robot Talk (Blending and Segmenting)
· Setup: Divide class into two groups: Robots and Humans
· The Routine: Robots speak in “code” by segmenting a word into individual phonemes (e.g. /ch/, /i/, /p/)
· Humans “translate” by blending the sounds to say the whole word.
(e.g. chip)
Variations: Swap roles after 3-5 words so everyone practices both segmenting and blending
The teacher can model the “Master Robot” role to introduce complex sounds
1. Visual Mapping with Elkonin Boxes
Provide Elkonin boxes and counters to each student. They place one counter in each box while repeating each sound. Students slide their finger under the sounds to say the word once they place all the sounds in boxes.
Teacher to the students: Listen: /b/, /a/, /g/
Students repeat /b/, /a/, /g/
Teacher to the students: the word is….. bag
